Casa Oropéndola is a private property located in the heart of Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, a lush mountain range that rises from the Caribbean ocean up to 5,776 masl. The house sits at 1,500 masl, between dense rainforest and coffee fields, with a perfect view of the ocean. This ecosystem is particularly unique because of the cloud forest formations that shelter an incredible biodiversity of flora and fauna.
Only here, one can experience a flood of clouds rise from the mountains, enter the house, and then slowly fade up into the sky for a breathtaking sunset – every afternoon.

Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta climbs to an altitude of 5,776 metres (18,950 feet) and is just 42 kilometres (26 miles) from the Caribbean coast, making it the highest coastal mountain range in the world. This unique placement offers an extensive diversity of ecosystems and climates, ranging from magnificent beaches to tropical rainforests and snowy mountain peaks. In this somewhat magical setting, you can experience the clouds sinking down and settling within the mountains before rising again to reveal a breath-taking view of the stars. Needless to say, watching a sunset over the ocean from 1,500 meters (4,921 feet) is a once in a lifetime experience.
La Sierra’s 17,000 km2 of land gives birth to 36 different rivers and a massive variety of flora and fauna. It is not only a bird haven, but also a paradise of exotic flowers, such as heliconias, anthuriums, gingers, and musas. Furthermore, the mild climate of the mountains is also ideal for exotic fruits and world-renowned coffee.

The Sierra Nevada mountains have been inhabited by indigenous communities for thousands of years. Today, the Wiwa, Kogui, Arhuaco and Kankuamo communities continue to preserve their traditional way of life, a strong culture and a belief system based on Mother Earth. As the “Elder Brothers”, these indigenous communities are the guardians of the Sierra Nevada, as they help protect and restore the forests, water sources, and fauna of the area.
A percentage of the profits from Casa Oropéndola and the experiences offered are dedicated to supporting local indigenous communities’ and projects to revitalise traditional education, in addition to Western education. It is critical that the new generations continue upholding the importance of protecting the environment and preserving their ancient culture, traditions and beliefs.
